Thanks for this, Mark. Beautifully summing up and articulating experiences I've had and not quite known how to put to words in a graceful way.

Hope you ended up making your flight on Sat. Good music lesson to 'distract' me from my suffering car.

I was so glad God directed me to this post today. Mark, even though we rarely communicate directly, you continue to be an inspiration to me. Keep asking the questions.
After a nasty house church demise, a year of non-reading (even the Bible), and a slow thaw in my spirit, God is calling me back into ministry. Can you believe it? Here's the interesting part. He's asking me to serve at an ELCA church. Me, a little Baptist-raised, former Willow World pastor, donning the robes and confessing with Martin. Our creator definitely knows how to make the journey interesting, and amazing.
Keep up the questions. You are the man.

I feel only compassion for the 'Derek' in this story; we all experience the darkness within, in our walk of faith. Os Guiness, didn't know i was going to mention him, addressed this in some detail in his, God in the Dark, which i found immensely helpful.

Recalling saying to my mother, in my mid-thirties (i'll be 51 in just a couple of weeks), that "the answers won't make a difference until we are asking the right questions." And the older i get the deeper my compassion toward her goes.

I am just now finding that it can take 30 + years of walking in the faith, only to arrive at the right questions! And so i keep on, always with His presence inside and with me, walking in the light; even when all appears to be the depths of darkness.

I have found that when I view faith as an aesthetic and not as a series of statements about metaphysical reality the wonder and spiritual connection I experience surpasses all understanding.

Faith is not a science; it is closer to an art form. When I view myself as an artist and not as a philosopher, biologist, chemist or a quantum physicist the pressure to "prove God" or to prove anything within the realm of faith evaporates and I can redirect my focus to bringing to Earth the Kingdom of Heaven.

This is exactly what I needed to hear and exactly what I'm going through right now. I feel lost and that the truths I knew in the past have become only head knowledge now. I'm not feeling right. Or good. In fact, I'm quite down. But now I know that that's ok.

Thank you for being part of what God is speaking to me.

Thank you for your thoughtfulness. I too have a hard time praying like I did in the past, probably due to disappointments.
